Folk Musicians Three On A String Takes SFCC Stage

Wednesday, January 18, 2012 · Arts & Culture

This dynamic trio performs classic standards, country, bluegrass and folk mixed with comedy.

Folk musicians Three on A String will perform during South Florida Community College’s Matinee Series on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 1:30 p.m., in the SFCC Theatre for the Performing Arts, Highlands Campus.

This dynamic trio performs classic standards, country, bluegrass and folk mixed with comedy. Their three-part harmony has a unique and pleasing blend, which has delighted audiences over their 40 year history.
Jerry Ryan is known as the master of ceremonies, guitar, and harmonica player. He is the director on stage, delivering timely punch lines and enjoying every second in the spotlight. He is known to say “I hate it when I have more fun than you do.” Like most men, he found a hobby later in life; unlike most men, however, his hobby was building a drum set he would play with his feet.
Brad Ryan, bass and fiddle player, grew up with Three On A String. He was 6 years old when his dad, Jerry Ryan, started Three On A String. He worked as a roady through his teenage years and later joined the band. Brad has ventured out on his own, producing theme songs and jingles such as the Rick and Bubba theme song. He has joined Jeff Otwell of Nashville Star in the country band, Brushfire. He also has a new solo CD, Have A Good Time.
An expert musician, Bobby Horton “plays anything that ain’t tied down,” quips Jerry Ran. But it is probably his physical humor that has endeared himself to Three On A String audiences throughout the years. Horton has found a niche as a music historian and sought after music producer. His series of “Homespun Songs of the Civil War” has been featured in many publications and won numerous awards, and his show, “Songs and Stories of the Civil War,” has been presented at SFCC twice. “I have two passions,” says Horton. “Music and history. I’ve been able to combine the two and do something I love to do. ”
The 2012 Matinee Series is sponsored by Dr. and Mrs. Dennis Bassetti, Lampe and Kiefer Hearing Aid Center, Inc., and The Palms of Sebring Retirement Community.
